Flying the KC-135

Install the KC-135 into your FS2002 \aircraft folder. If you haven't already done so, follow the instructions on our installation page. Press the 'S' key to see the 2D cockpit; press the 'S' key again to see the 3D cockpit and twice more to see the Chipmunk from the spot plane view. Here's a quick walk around: Press 'E' to start the engines Press F8 to see the flaps slowly drop into position. Press F5 to retract the flaps for takeoff. Press the stick forward and back to see the elevator move up and down. Press the stick from side to side to see the rudder and ailerons move. After you take off, press 'G' to see the landing gears fold into the underbelly. Open and close the cockpit window using Shift + E key. Deply the thrust reversers using the '/' key. Takeoff The Stratotanker is powered by 4 huge CFM-56 turbofans engines. Start the engines (Ctrl + E) and set 30 degrees of flaps. Give it full throttle and let the aircraft build up momentum. You've got a lot of weight to pull and you'll use a good portion of the runway. When you're rolling at about 120 knots, pull back slightly to lift the nose wheel off the runway. Don't pull up quickly, you'll need to let her gently lift herself to become airborne, don't rush it. From spot view, you can watch the control surfaces move smoothly. Press 'G' to retract the landing gear and see them smoothly tuck themselves into the underbody. Performance The big lumbering Stratotanker operates very deliberately. She will gradually build up speed and climbing performance shortly after takeoff. Off of the ground, she's very responsive and can cruise at up to 500 knots over a 1600 mile range. In air refueling is its main mission and the large refueling boom drops down to feed the 'litter'. To lower the boom, you may have to assign a key combination (e.g. Shift + T) using Flight Simulator menu Options | Control for "Tail Boom".    Landing It's best to bring her in with a long, stable approach with full flaps at about 130 knots. Over the threshold, cut power and let the main gear settle onto the asphalt. Thrust reversers are deployed using the '/' key.
